How to Change the Air Filter on a 2006 Toyota Avalon

How to Change the Air Filter on a 2006 Toyota Avalon

The Avalon, Toyota's flagship car, comes standard with a 3.5 liter V-6 engine and automatic overdrive transmission. The Avalon was introduced in 1995 as a step-up to Toyota's ever-popular Camry. The Avalon was restyled in 2005 and has remained virtually unchanged as of 2010. The engine air filter element used in the 2005-10 Avalon is a replaceable cartridge made from pleated paper. The air filter element can be changed in a matter of minutes.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Air filter cartridge
  • Rag
    • 1

Open the hood of your Avalon

    • 2

Locate the black plastic air box which is mounted on the top of the engine near the driver's side spring tower.

    • 3

Remove the black rubber hose from the back of the air box lid by loosening the hose clamp with a flat-blade screwdriver turned in a counterclockwise direction. Pull the hose from the air box and push it aside.

    • 4

Flip up the wire clips by hand that hold the air box lid in place. Lift the lid from the air box and set it aside.

    • 5

Lift the air filter cartridge from the air box and discard it. Wipe up any dirt, bugs, or other contaminants from the interior of the air box with a damp rag.

    • 6

Place a new air filter cartridge into the air box with the pleats facing downwards. Sit the air box lid back onto the air box. Secure the lid by pushing down on the wire holding clips until they snap into place.

    • 7

Push the rubber hose onto the back side of the air box lid until it is fully seated. Tighten the hose clamp with a flat blade screwdriver in a clockwise direction. Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • A dirty or clogged air filter element can result in poor gas mileage and decreased horsepower by reducing the flow of fresh, clean air to the engine's intake manifold. Toyota recommends changing the filter every 30,000 miles or three years, whichever comes first. If you travel dirt roads frequently, it is recommended that you check your air filter every 5,000 miles and replace it as necessary.
