How to Tow a Toyota Highlander 4WD Hybrid

The Toyota Highlander 4WD Hybrid is a mid-size SUV. The proper way to tow the Highlander would be with a full-size tow trailer that will support the Highlander with all four tires off of the ground. Towing your Highlander this way will help to keep miles off of the tires and engine and stop any other unwanted damage while you are towing the Toyota Highlander. You will also need the make sure that the towing vehicle and trailer have working brake connections.

  • Tow trailer
  • Padlock
  • Brake connections
  • Axle straps
  • Ratchet straps

      Back the towing vehicle to the trailer and connect the trailer to the trailer hitch on the tow vehicle. Connect the brake connections on the trailer to the connections on the tow vehicle. Lock the trailer to the tow vehicle, using a padlock.

      Lower the load ramps on the back of the trailer and drive the Toyota Highlander onto the trailer. Make sure that the Highlander is centered in the middle of the trailer.

      Wrap an axle strap around the lower control arm on the front right side. Connect one end of the ratchet strap to the axle strap, using the hook on the end of the ratchet strap. Pull the opposite end of the ratchet strap to the left side anchor point on the floor of the trailer and connect the hook on that end to the anchor point on the trailer. Repeat for the left side. Tighten the ratchet straps so that a half-inch of slack is in the straps. The straps should make an X shape.

      Repeat step three for the rear axle.

      Close all of the windows and set the parking brake on the Toyota Highlander.
