How to Change Out a Fuel Filter on a 1990 Toyota Corolla

How to Change Out a Fuel Filter on a 1990 Toyota Corolla

As part of general maintenance and upkeep of your 1990 Toyota Corolla, you need to replace periodically its fuel filter. Even though the part is fairly inexpensive, having a mechanic replace it can be costly. But you can replace it yourself right at home with little know-how and no specific tools. By replacing it yourself you not only become more familiar with your Corolla but save money as well. You should change your filter roughly every 60,000 to 80,000 miles according to Toyota Corolla manuals.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of your 1990 Toyota Corolla.

    • 2

Locate the fuel filter. It is on the far right side---if standing at the front of the car facing it---just behind the air filter and attached to either the firewall or the exterior panel of the engine compartment with a metal clip-like device.

    • 3

Unhook the fuel filter from the clip holding it in place.

    • 4

Disconnect the line from the top of the existing fuel filter and insert it into the top of the new fuel filter. It should just pull off without tools.

    • 5

Disconnect the line from the bottom of the existing fuel filter and insert it into the bottom of the new fuel filter. Again, it should just pull off. If the line does not slide off the filter easily you may need to contact a mechanic regarding your lines.

    • 6

Reattach the fuel filter to your Toyota Corolla using the clip. Make sure that your fuel lines are still fully inserted into the fuel filter.

    • 7

Start your Corolla and look for any signs of fuel leaking from around the filter. If fuel is leaking double-check that the lines are seated properly in the filter. If they are and it is still leaking, you may need to return the filter and get a new one or contact your mechanic.
