How to Install Headlights on a Toyota 1991 MR2

How to Install Headlights on a Toyota 1991 MR2

One of the few faults of the Toyota MR2 is that it was built with sealed-beam headlights (as most cars were in 1991), and this type of headlight is bulky and tends to burn out more often than the newer, compact halogen bulbs. The bright side is that these headlights are very easy to change; you can do it in less than an hour.

Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
    • 1

Turn the key to the on position and then twist the headlight switch three clicks to the on position. Now the headlights will be flipped up and on. Then twist the headlight switch back one click; this will turn off the lights but leave the housings in the up position.

    • 2

With a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the four screws from the headlight bezel. The headlight bezel is a thin, square piece of metal that surrounds the headlight. Avoid the nearby screws used to adjust the headlight alignment. These are located off the side of the headlight bezel.

    • 3

Remove the headlight bezel, which is now free and can be pulled away from the headlight assembly.

    • 4

Carefully pull the old headlight from the enclosure and gently disconnect the wiring harness.

    • 5

Plug the wiring harness into the back of the new headlight and carefully place it into the headlight housing.

    • 6

Put the headlight bezel back around the headlight. Replace the four screws and tighten them.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 1 through 6 on other the headlight, then twist the headlight switch to the on position once more to test the new lights.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are several different brightness options for the sealed-beam headlights; pick the one that will best suit your driving needs.
