How to Replace a 1992 Toyota Truck Starter
The typical 1992 Toyota pickup has seen a lot of miles over the years, and the starter has turned over the engine thousands of times. Most likely, the starter has already been replaced once or twice already, from wear and tear. When it goes out again, you'll be stuck wherever you are and will most likely require a tow back home to fix the problem. Fortunately, it's not very difficult to replace the starter.

Use a jack to pick up the front end of the truck then set the frame on the jack stands. Open the hood and use an open-end wrench to remove the negative terminal from the battery, then do the same on the positive terminal.
- 2
Locate the starter on the engine underneath the exhaust manifold on the passenger side of the engine, next to the transmission. Label each wire on the starter using masking tape and a permanent marker. Then disconnect the wiring using the open-end wrench.
- 3
Unbolt the starter from the transmission using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Carefully lower it away from the engine.
- 4
Place the new starter into the bell housing and verify that the drive teeth on the starter mesh with the flywheel. Then bolt it into place using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets.
- 5
Reinstall the wiring on the starter motor using the open-end wrench, following the labels you noted previously as a guide. Lower the truck back onto the ground using the jack, reconnect the positive then the negative terminal on the battery using the wrench and start the truck to make sure it's functioning correctly.

It is almost impossible to get the starter out of the hood, as there is no space. This is a terrible design by Toyota.
